During his Third Udasi or travel in 1514 A.D., when Guru Nanak Dev ji came here, this place was known as Gorakhmata, after the name of Baba Gorakhnath. The Siddhas (or yogis) inhabited this place. These Siddhas tried all efforts to get the Sri Guru Nanak dev Ji away from this place but they get defeated all the time in there efforts.These efforts are summarized in history of : When all efforts of the Siddhas got failed they made a conspiracy, dig a dug and hided a boy in it and told him to answer when they ask the question. Siddhas questioned two times : Hey Land, to whom do you belong ? The boy answered (pretending as earth) each time that I belong to Siddhas. Third time Guru Nanak Dev Ji asked the same question and a voice came from the earth itself three times in a row as: | Nanakmatta | Nanakmatta | Nanakmatta |
Hence this place came to be known as Nanakmatta (Or Nanakmatta Sahib) |
